If you haven't had a chance yet, go and check out a video that Goulet Pens released last week which featured an interview between Brian Goulet and the co-founders of Nock Co, Brad Dowdy and Jeff Bruckwicki. It's an interesting look inside a growing business and, as the video was recorded a few months before it was released, viewers end up with some context around comments which were (intentionally) vague in the video. There's plenty of insights for the curious, but the one which struck me was that both the Nock guys seemed keen on transitioning to retail. For today's post, we'll have a look at the economics behind such a transition and why it's not more common.

Are Fountain Pens Good for the Environment?

I saw a tweet the other day which got me thinking. It was a picture of the poster’s shiny new fountain pen, with an announcement that they had converted because FPs were better for environment. You’ve probably seen this claim a bunch of times before but are less likely to have seen anything backing it up. I had a good look around and found nothing. But it struck me as an interesting claim so today we’ll explore whether fountain pens are actually more environmentally friendly than a ballpoint.

The Value of a Pen

Recently, I’ve been considering the purchase of a new pen. There’s nothing unusual in that, except that this particular pen is what you might consider an ultra high-end purchase and easily worth more than the rest of my collection combined. There isn’t much discussion about the buying considerations for something like this, so although I haven’t made a final decision just yet, I thought it would be interesting to explore what has been on my mind over the last few weeks.
